Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:55 pm   Local ghost stories

While responding to another post, I started thinking about haunted places in my own city. So I thought I'd ask--What are some local ghost stories where you guys live?

nice topic, sauro. I was thinkin of something like this, too!

O.k. In Lowell, Massachusetts, to get to the major highway, you had to go through this highway strip called Route 3. There are many stories of ghostly sighting along this highway. I'll share one with you:

When i was working at showcase cinema a few years ago, my trainee told me a story involving his older mother and brother. One night, as they were returning home from Boston, they decided to save time and take route 3. As they drove down the quiet highway they saw a person on the breakdown lane waving. They ignored it and continued on(It wasn't until later, that they admit that something didn't feel right). A few minutes later, they saw the same person on the breakdown lane waving. At this point, the mother panicked! She started yelling and screaming. then she closed her eyes and prayed. A few minutes later, they saw it AGAIN!!! But this time, there was no waving. The brother described it as a woman, giving him such an intensed gaze that it sent a chill down his spine. The mother was still praying with her eyes close so she didn't not see it the third time. But something stranged happened. Despite the car moving at over 55 mph, the figure was able to locked gaze with the brother for a few seconds; meaning it must've been floating forward as well. THEN IT HAPPENED!! As he composed himself, he glanced in the rear view mirror and saw the woman running behind the car still gazing at him. He speed up! After a second glanced, she was gone. And that night, he developed a fever.

Holy crap! That would probably make me pee my pantaloons. That's pretty freaky.

Well. I live in Memphis. We have several haunted places around here. I think the most famous story would be the Orpheum ghost. There's a little girl that haunts the Orpheum theatre downtown, usually a particular seat (I can't recall the seat number off hand, but it's in the balconies). She was hit and killed by a trolley a long time ago just outside the theatre, so now she haunts the inside. I never saw her, but a LOT of people have. To be fair, I've only been inside the Orpheum maybe 3 or 4 times.

Another place around here is Earnestine and Hazel's. It used to be a whorehouse back in the day, so of course debauchery ensues. There are several ghosts said to haunt the upstairs. There was a tv special on this place just this past Halloween and I got so excited because I was like, I've been up there! But that was before I knew it was haunted and, er, was a bit underage to have been in there in the first place. Aaaaanyway...When I was in there, things definitely felt a bit weird, but nothing too obvious. Just kind of a heavy, sad feeling.

Then there's the Woodruff-Fontaine house in Victorian Village. I loooooove this house so much. To make a long story short, the daughter of the house's owner is the one that supposedly haunts the place, particularly the Rose room, her bedroom. I did see what people say is her ghost, this orangey red orb. But that was years ago. The last time I went, last summer, I didn't really see or feel anything, but my friend and I are fairly certain that's the fault of our tour guide. If I can remember other places around the city, I'll add them.

Hey ya guys,

ghost stories, i have many.

i always knew my parents house was a lil dirty (if u get my drift). There was this banana tree right outside my bedroom window. And sht, i always get bad nightmares everynight, so i turned to sleeping pills, rosaries n bible beside me and sleeping with the tv on. There was this one night, it took me half an hour to get to sleep as usual, and just when i dozed off i felt like something or someone was watching me. I slowly open my eyes and saw this old asian woman (im asian too) pale as hell (oops) with her hair tied back into a bun, eyes looking really droopy right at me, and really white lips. The face was about 3 inches off my face. I freaked out and blinked and it was gone.

It never occured to me that banana trees are associated with ghost, crap n i always sneak a ciggarette around midnight too. I always get this feeling like i was being watched from the bushes.

Oh, i was followed home by a ghost when i was younger. You see, my grandfather passed away and we went to the cemetery, according to the chinese superstitions, you suppose to pay respects at the altar before you go in. I was carryin my baby cousin at the time and couldn't be bothered, also i was a christian at the time so i thought it wouldn't apply to me. lol.

Anyway, when u visit the cemetery you're not suppose to look at other deceased people's photos let alone think or make any comments. That is sooo much easier said than done really. I saw this one photo and thought "shit, so young.. sigh" guess what guys, it followed me home.

When i was sleeping at night, i felt like something was sitting on me so i couldn't breathe. it was this suffocating and claustrophobic feeling. I got freaked out so i ran to my dad's room. When i opened the door, he woke up and got really shocked. He (as a devout christian) grabbed me and sat me down and began praying in tounges. It was quite bizzare really. Later he went to my bedroom and start to point to the corner of my bed, yelling "I demand you leave in the name of jesus christ" over and over again. Till this day, he never told me what he saw.

After that, i think the spirit left because i slept better. Ok this thing is really freaking me out lol. But to keep things short i now believe in ghost.

Oh yeah, i always visit this site. www.castleofspirits.com its a good site for ghost stories so check it out. thanks for reading guys.

I haven't heard any ghost stories in my city. At most, I only hear about my city having two haunted houses. That's about it. 8)

Whew, that was creeeepy!!! Thanx for the link, btw! Here's another story that i read about. It take place in my homeland of Cambodia:

In Cambodia, it has been said that if you walk at night during a certain hour, you shouldn't think of anything evil or else it will happen! A group of kids was hungry (this was during khmer rouge regime) so they decided to go look for food in the woods. There was a mango tree with a lot of fresh mangos. Everyone decided to climb it and picked the fruits. Suddenly, one the kids yelled ghost! Within that second, all the kids jumped down and ran. While running, one boy says don't look back. But not listening, my aunt looked back and saw a lady in white with long hair that touched the ground and a face so demonic, you will never forget. Terrified, everyone continued to run like hell. My aunt, being the last one, fell and one of her friends came and helped herup. They all ran back to the village screaming and crying. A couple of days went by and my aunt became very ill. So ill that her hair was falling off and she was completely bald. Months went by, she lost so much weight that people in the village suggested that she see a witch doctor (one that heals from evil spirits). The doctor came and told her parents the reason for her being sick was that she saw the spirit and that spirit cursed her to be sick and to see evil things no 8 year old was supposed to see. The doctor healed her completely. He also explained that the spirit was a lady who committed suicide while 7 months pregnant because he husband left her for another woman. So by that mango tree around 12:00 to 6:00 in the morning, you will see her on the tree with her baby in her arm singing to it and scaring anyone who trespasses her tree.

Never again did my aunt went back.

I moved to Dublin almost two years ago, but prior to that I lived in Chicago for nearly ten years. Though I wasn't born there, I did spend the most formative years of my youth there and will always call Chicago home.

Though there are lots of hauntings in Chicago, I only want to talk about the one that I was closest to... The Red Lion Pub in Lincoln Park. It was actually the first place I had a drink after moving to Chicago (I was only 20 at the time, shhh) and I drank there quite frequently over the last five years of living there. I also worked at the Pub as a barman/waiter for the last two years I was in Chicago.

There are lots of stories I could tell, but I'm going to start with my own. The first experience I had was after hours one night while drinking a few late pints with my boss Colin, who is also one of the owners of the pub. We were just talking about life and recent events, when I got a strange feeling... like you see everyone get in the ghost movies. Specifically, I got a chill and felt the hair on my arms standing straight up. Colin must have felt it as well, because he looked directly at me and said "my father is here tonight." His father had passed away a few years before.

My second experience was again after hours on a late night drinking session with Colin. This time there were a couple of gals and another local regular in the pub with us... I believe it was around 4 AM. I had a similar feeling to the one I previously described, and then we heard some sounds from the upstairs. The upstairs housed the office, and had another bar with two rooms that we only really used for special events and private parties. I had worked an event up there a couple nights before in fact. Anyway, the sounds were like thumps and heavy dragging. Colin and I went upstairs to check it out, and all of the barstools had been moved to various places around the room. They had been pushed up against the bar earlier that evening.

The last experience I had was while I was working the upstairs patio area as a waiter. I was walking down the back hall that lead to the back stairs and I passed the storeroom. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a small girl in the stores that I assumed to be Maria from the kitchen. I walked right by her and up to the kitchen window to get some food for one of my tables and there was Maria at the window. I went straight back and no one was in the storeroom.

There are many different ghosts which supposedly haunt The Red Lion, including Colin's Father, Grandfather, a young girl who had died in the building when it was apartments, a man wearing a cowboy hat, and probably more that I can't even think of. I could tell more stories that were related to me, but I wanted to just give you my own strange experiences first and see if anyone really cares... lol.

Sorry for digging up an old thread!
- Ian
