Hmmm... this isn't so easy to do. First, I'm realizing that a lot of the Western horror movies I've seen just weren't very good. Secondly, my favorites probably change with some frequency, as do my tastes... lol. Here goes nothing:
1. The Grudge scared the piss outta me when I first saw it. I wouldn't have ever been interested in Asian Horror if not for this re-make... mostly because I found The Ring (US) laughable for some reason.
2. Dawn of the Dead 2004 was great for me because I loved the first 20 minutes of the film, and the idea of fast zombies was really scary to me.
3. Silent Hill was pretty damn good for a video-game spawned film. I liked the creature FX a lot, and overall I found the film pretty frightening.
4. The Thing From Another World was one of the first and earliest horror films I ever saw. It probably wouldn't bother me now, but that plantlike alien thing really creeped me out as a child.
5. The Blair Witch Project had an effect on me despite all the hype and BS about it. I waited until it was on video and then watched it at night all alone with the sound cranked in my apartment. I went camping in the woods a lot as a child, and my cousin and I used to scare each other with ghost and monster stories all the time to the point that we'd barely get any sleep, and none until the sun came up. That said, I found this film very unsettling... in a good way.
6. Alien has been mentioned a few times here already, but that is because it simply is one of the best horror films ever made. Man eating monster on a claustrophobic spaceship... come on! You know this one scared you when you were a kid.
7. Poltergeist is my all time scariest movie, but again I saw it when I was only about 5 years old. I had a huge old tree outside my house growing up, and I don't think I opened the blinds at night ever again after seeing this. I also blame this film for my phobia of evil clowns... not the funny cute ones mind you, but the ones that look like they'd stab you as soon as make you a balloon animal. Note that I haven't seen this film in 25 years, and probably won't again as I don't want to spoil the scariest movie memory of my life.
8. An American Werewolf in London was a brilliant film with one of the coolest werewolf transformation scenes ever in my opinion. It was agonizingly slow and painful, which is just as it should be. I also think this movie has one of the best endings ever, and I thought Jenny Agutter was a babe. Perhaps this movie is why I ended up marrying a nurse 25 years later?
9. Evil Dead 2 is just one of the funnest horror films I've seen. The first time I was very young and it terrified me, but later on in life I'd watch it with all my punk friends and we'd guzzle beer and laugh our asses off. One night I think we watched it almost three times... man, that was a lot of beer!
10. Psycho is just a masterpiece... there's no better word to describe it in my opinion. Great director, great writing, great acting, and an all over great experience! There are many movies that have been inspired in some way by real-life serial-killer Ed Gein, but this is the best BY FAR! Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't even compare, and it's the closest second. Granted, TCM was scarier in a lot of ways, but this film is so atmospheric and absorbing... I just can't say enough good things about it. For the record, I'm referring to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 original... the re-make is sadly a sacrilege in my opinion.
Well, that's it for now. Sorry about all the text... lol. |
