If you don't mind the horror movie cliches, then I can recommend this film. I say this because I saw at least one scene in the film that seemed to be copied and pasted directly out of another movie of greater poplularity and commercial success. It also has a long haired creepy girly ghost in it, which seems to be a staple in many Asian horror films. Mind you, I'm not complaining about this... in fact those girls really creep me out! I only mention it because I know that some people find it to be a turn-off.
My wife is from the Philippines, and I always laughed at the idea of the Sukob. I still remember her telling me that her sister would probably push back her wedding because we had decided to get married the same year... that was the first time I ever heard of this curse. If you don't already know, Filipinos are often very superstitious and maintain a lot of their old supernatural folklore despite being predominantly Catholic. Part of that folklore is the premise for this movie.
There were a couple of good jump-scares in this movie, and most of the acting was pretty good. I see a lot of Kris Aquino in my home, whether it is in movies or hosting gameshows and talkshows, and overall I tend to enjoy her.
Sukob definitely isn't the best film on this site, but I highly doubt it's the worst either. There's nothing new here, other than the Sukob itself, but it's done well enough to be entertaining in my opinion.
I may just watch it again one of these nights to see the subtitles. I had to rely on my very weak knowledge of Tagalog and an occasional interpretation from the missus to follow the dialogue last time.
Cheers,
- Ian |
